Explore one of Yorkshire's greatest Cistercian monastries
Take in the beautiful ruins of the great rose window and admire the decorative tiled floors which still adorn the south transept which are among the most extensive displays of 13th-century tiling to be seen anywhere today. Find out more about monastic life in Yorkshire through the artefacts in the museum and enjoy a Yorkshire welcome in our nearby Byland Abbey Inn serving a wide selection of homemade cakes, light lunches and snacks. Byland was probably the most ambitious Cistercian abbey built in England during the 12th century. It was designed to accommodate about 100 monks and 200 lay brothers. This September enjoy a programme of events at some of Yorkshire's greatest abbeys and priories.Meet costumed characters and join them on a walking tour of this beautiful site to learn about its history.
